Anorexia Nervosa is not something that can be taken lightly. It is a very serious and potentially fatal eating disorder. In fact, anorexia tallies one of the highest death rates among all identified psychological disorders. Although the exact cause of this condition is yet unknown, most health experts agree that a combination of emotional, physical and behavioral factors can lead to the disorder.
Anorexia can result in a harsh physical toll on the sufferer and an even deeper emotional wound on his or her family and friends. For this reason, it is important to educate yourself regarding this condition, especially if you suspect that someone you love is already struggling with anorexia or any other eating disorder.
There many signs of anorexia nervosa and the most common of these signs are listed below:
- Food avoidance
- Denial of hunger, even though a person has not eaten
- Ritualistic eating
- Severe and almost immediate weight-loss
- An unreasonable preoccupation with one's appearance and weight
- Lack of willingness to eat with other people
Aside from these behavioral signs of anorexia, there are also physical signs which may sometimes be easier and faster to notice.
- Amenorrhea, or the absence of menstruation for at least three consecutive months, where before menstrual cycles has been regular
- Hair loss
- Lingering colds or other illnesses; or a general weakening of the immune system
- Extra sensitivity to cold
- Extreme fatigue
A person suffering from anorexia most often becomes a perfectionist and they usually ignore or reject comments from other people regarding their physical appearance. If you notice any combination of the above signs of anorexia in one or more of your family and friends, this might be the right time to seek professional help for that person, before everything becomes too late.
